Trials of an Intern: You're still going to fuck up, even if you ask a lot of Questions
I know it's been a while and I promised weekly posts but whatevs. I'm going to call this series, "Trials of an Intern." I want them to be short sweet and kind of funny. I will illuminate the highs and lows of my time as an intern in DC. I plan to write them when I get into work or at the end of the day. I just am not going to talk about my last internship though. That was a disaster.
So, today is the third day of my internship in DC. Everybody is super nice, the research is interesting and my boss is cool. I'm really happy that I get to work here. My job is basically an 8 hour googling session so far.
Now for today's story. It is about a 30 minute walk from my apartment to the office and I left early so I was the first person to arrive today. I come in through the side door using the passcode and something starts beeping. At first I was like, "well it'll probably stop beeping in a minute." But it did not. I straight go into problem solving mode. Here's my line of thought.
- Think back did anyone tell he how to stop turn it off? No
- How can I find out how to turn it off? Ask someone who works here. But I'm the only one here right now.
- Wait there's a phone number list.
- I called two numbers before someone picked up.
- Then I inputted the number he gave me and we were all good!
So everything worked out in the end but for that 15 minute period, I was totally freaked out! It never even occurred to me to ask more details about the alarm system and coming in early. So the moral of this story is, even if you ask a ton of questions, there is always something left that no one told you.
Bonus: One of my coworkers sent me this video! Hilarious! http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=7YLy4j8EZIk
