Trials of an Intern: Just smile and pretend like being the new guy doesn't suck!

Trials of an Intern: Just smile and pretend like being the new guy doesn't suck!

I think I'm starting to take this blog seriously! I'm going to post whenever I have a free day at work. Maybe a Monday or Friday kind of deal.

We got a new intern on Wednesday. He's a cool guy from Florida applying to Med school. We also got a new communications director. A nice lady from another local organization.

Lets talk about being the new guy! As you'll recall, last week I was the new person in the office. Whether it's at a clothing store or a Fortune 500 company, everyone is the new guy at some point in their career. There is a distinct sense of dread when being the new guy. Here are just a few of the fears that went through my mind when I was preparing for my first day:

  • I don't have enough professional clothes, they won't take me seriously!
  • My natural hair will give people the wrong impression!
  • Who am I going to eat lunch with and what will I eat for lunch!?
  • I'm not competent enough for this job, they're going to fire me!
  • I hope no one yell at me when I mess up!
  • Oh God! I can't mess up, I have to be perfect!
The list just goes on and on. I was really working myself into a frenzy and the worries were snowballing. Then my first day came along. Everyone was extremely nice and courteous. The work was challenging but not impossible and definitely interesting! I made a few mistakes but no one cast me out onto the street or yelled at me. I was definitely on my guard with my eyes and ears wide open for hints and tips. I was also feeling the office politics out (that deserves a post unto its self). Then the new people came and I was the one who knew things and who could help them along this week. My expectations were GREATLY exceeded. It would have been better if I had never bothered to worry because none of that bad stuff came true!

I guess the moral of this story is, "Everyone knows that it's hard to be the new guy and it's a continuous learning process. Therefore, you should just smile and pretend like it doesn't suck because eventually someone else will be the new guy!" Go kick some internship ass!

But right now the other intern is working and I feel bad so let me go do something!

Trials of an Intern: You're still going to fuck up, even if you ask a lot of Questions

Trials of an Intern: You're still going to fuck up, even if you ask a lot of Questions

Hey blogger,

I know it's been a while and I promised weekly posts but whatevs. I'm going to call this series, "Trials of an Intern." I want them to be short sweet and kind of funny. I will illuminate the highs and lows of my time as an  intern in DC. I plan to write them when I get into work or at the end of the day. I just am not going to talk about my last internship though. That was a disaster.

So, today is the third day of my internship in DC. Everybody is super nice, the research is interesting and  my boss is cool. I'm really happy that I get to work here. My job is basically an 8 hour googling session so far.

Now for today's story. It is about a 30 minute walk from my apartment to the office and I left early so I was the first person to arrive today. I come in through the side door using the passcode and something starts beeping. At first I was like, "well it'll probably stop beeping in a minute." But it did not. I straight go into problem solving mode. Here's my line of thought.

  • Think back did anyone tell he how to stop turn it off? No
  • How can I find out how to turn it off? Ask someone who works here. But I'm the only one here right now.
  • Wait there's a phone number list.
  • I called two numbers before someone picked up.
  • Then I inputted the number he gave me and we were all good!
So everything worked out in the end but for that 15 minute period, I was totally freaked out! It never even occurred to me to ask more details about the alarm system and coming in early. So the moral of this story is, even if you ask a ton of questions, there is always something left that no one told you.

Bonus: One of my coworkers sent me this video! Hilarious! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YLy4j8EZIk

Hair Wednesday: Let's begin.

Yeah I know it's Thursday but Whatever!

Let's talk about hair! This month marks me being 10 months natural. I guess I'll do a length check tomorrow when I do my wash.  At some point I will post some in depth information about my journey but I want to talk about something else for this post.

What I am holding in my hand is a Genie loc or Yarn Braid. Hairscapades had a post this week about Yarn Wraps and I was curious so I did some research and discovered yarn braids! I said to myself, "I can plait!" and attempted one. I LOVE IT!!

(Just discovered I can enlarge photos on here also ignore my room, it stays a mess)

Right now I am preparing for the 10+ hours to put in these yarn braids. I have some dark brown yarn laying around from my crocheting days but it's seriously tangled so I'm going to untangle it and cut it tonight. I'm also going to prepoo tonight and do a normal wash early tomorrow morning then begin the braids. I want to be done by 8pm, which means no slacking!  Hopefully all goes well. If not, I'm going to have my cousin do them for me!
I will be back next week to talk about the process and let you know how everything goes!

Peace.

Mani-Monday!!

I totally failed at posting last week! Oh gosh!

Hello there! It's the first Mani-Monday! I have two pictures for you from the first one is from a few months ago and the second one is from about a year ago.
I absolutely detest those gorgeous mani blogs that don't go into detail about their technique so I will be sure to let you all know what I did. My mani monday posts will also focus a lot on cheaper brands because not everyone can afford to buy $10.50 all the time.

Description: This is a mani I did after being inspired by a Pinterest post that was in turn inspired by the Little Mermaid. I apologize for the cuticle flooding on this one. (Link) Oh and I'm holding Love & Beauty Wine in this picture.
Colors: Smush by Urban Outfitters, H&M Pear Ice cream, OPI Thanks a Winmillion, and OPI Malaysian Mist (pink).
Technique: The accent nail is a free hand using a the smallest m.a.s.h. brush I had. This is a good way to fix manis that have begin to chip! The rest of my nails are a sponge gradient of the other three greenish blues with a coat of Wet n wild
Description: I really wanted to recreate this clutch! Unfortunately this February it got stolen so I no longer own it!
Colors: Love & Beauty Coral, Love & Beauty Green and Black Poppy in a gold shade that doesn't have a name. This is the first awesome gold color that I had bought. I found it at Pac Sun for $3.50.
Technique: Clear base coat, One coat of gold and BM 04 in green on ring finger and BM 09 on index finger.

I'm working on getting some Nail wheels so that I can show you all of my nail polish!

Well, see ya!

Blog Post Schedule

Hello!
As you know, I am new to this blogging thing but I feel a great need to write. For most of my life, I have kept a journal but as I get older, they seem to get less relevant. I kind of want to create something with this blog. Something memorable and that will help me work through some things. Making lists and goals is one of the things I do a lot. So...lets list it out!!

Purposes of this blog:

  • Chronicle my first year of Graduate School
  • Track my Natural Hair Journey
  • Show off nail art
Also, this writing may be able to help me to improve my writing, which will aid me greatly in Graduate School!

Perhaps a schedule will be the best way to make this kind of routine. The Grad school stuff will come later in the summer but for now how about Mondays for nail art and Hair Saturdays! This isn't a hard and fast schedule, I may write more than this but I will definitely have these posts each week!

In addition to this I have also made the goal of writing a cover letter per day this summer as I am trying to obtain an internship and/or job!

I have to say, I've been reading blogs for some time and there are some really awesome ones out there. I doubt that my blog will ever gain much traction but I feel like it might help me a lot personally! :)

Well see ya!

Test Post: Do Not Reply

Hello there internet. I love blogs. I use a wonderful website called Bloglovin where I can subscribe to all of my favorite blogs and get new posts in one seamless timeline. So what is my blog about. Well, I like a lot of things. Natural hair, nail polish and cartoons. I'm also starting Grad School this fall! If I continue this blog, those are the thing I will talk about!

That's enough for now! I will see where this progresses!

Ta ta for now! :)
