Trials of an Intern: Just smile and pretend like being the new guy doesn't suck!
I think I'm starting to take this blog seriously! I'm going to post whenever I have a free day at work. Maybe a Monday or Friday kind of deal.
We got a new intern on Wednesday. He's a cool guy from Florida applying to Med school. We also got a new communications director. A nice lady from another local organization.
Lets talk about being the new guy! As you'll recall, last week I was the new person in the office. Whether it's at a clothing store or a Fortune 500 company, everyone is the new guy at some point in their career. There is a distinct sense of dread when being the new guy. Here are just a few of the fears that went through my mind when I was preparing for my first day:
- I don't have enough professional clothes, they won't take me seriously!
- My natural hair will give people the wrong impression!
- Who am I going to eat lunch with and what will I eat for lunch!?
- I'm not competent enough for this job, they're going to fire me!
- I hope no one yell at me when I mess up!
- Oh God! I can't mess up, I have to be perfect!
The list just goes on and on. I was really working myself into a frenzy and the worries were snowballing. Then my first day came along. Everyone was extremely nice and courteous. The work was challenging but not impossible and definitely interesting! I made a few mistakes but no one cast me out onto the street or yelled at me. I was definitely on my guard with my eyes and ears wide open for hints and tips. I was also feeling the office politics out (that deserves a post unto its self). Then the new people came and I was the one who knew things and who could help them along this week. My expectations were GREATLY exceeded. It would have been better if I had never bothered to worry because none of that bad stuff came true!
I guess the moral of this story is, "Everyone knows that it's hard to be the new guy and it's a continuous learning process. Therefore, you should just smile and pretend like it doesn't suck because eventually someone else will be the new guy!" Go kick some internship ass!
But right now the other intern is working and I feel bad so let me go do something!
